The Winter Blues

Although I don't suffer from seasonal affective disorder, I do however find myself become depressed during the winter time. Like I'm sure a lot of us become when the time changes and it starts getting dark at 4 o'clock instead of 8. Especially because I love being active I feel like I have to push everything up earlier in the day and I never feel like I have time for anything. If I want to go for a run I have to make sure I go right after class or else I'm not going at all and then I become overwhelmed trying to fit everything in.
But like I said, fortunately I do not suffer from SAD, however I actually went to high school with a girl who did. We had class together two years in a row and I didn't find out until the second year that she suffered from this disorder. Every winter she would miss weeks and sometimes even months from school because she would become so depressed. Whether you are an individual that suffers from SAD or just the winter blues hopefully this clip will give you some tips in fighting it.

  1. Although having the day off from work or school when it is raining out is always a good excuse to relax all day, dreary weather is absolutely a downer. I think everyone has seasonal affective disorder to some degree. The sun is a source of motivation in my opinion, I always feel much guiltier wasting a gorgeous day than a rainy one. It is no surprise that suicide rates are so high in Washington state, the weather has to be a factor in this.

  2. I agree with Courtney. It seems like everyone might have a seasonal affective disorder to a certain extent. I know I feel much better when the weather is warmer and I can go for a walk without being freezing. Also, its so much easier to get out of bed in the morning and be productive when its nice outside opposed to when its freezing... I'd rather just stay in bed and keep warm.

  3. I am very depressed in the winter time. Its hard for me to get out of bed and as soon as i am done with school or work i go right back into my room. I need the warm weather to feel happy. My doctor told me to try tanning beds because they feel like the sun but as we all know they are bad for your health in other ways. I cannot wait until i graduate because the second i do i will be moving to florida!

  4. I concur that everyone has this to a certain extent. It seems par for the course in NJ. I have known people from the south that when they come to NJ they do not understand why everyone turns into hermits during the winter here. Eventually, they too began being defeated by the winter here. The sun does affect your mood, energy and motivation.

  5. I knew someone who suffered from SAD. Sure enough just around the middle of the fall till the time when spring finally starts to feel like spring she is miserable. You could almost never get her to participate in any activity, never wanted to hang out with her friends, never even wanted to leave the house. SAD would obviously be more prevalent in New Jersey than somewhere more south but just imagine living in Alaska where there are 30 days of continuous light followed by 30 days of continuous dark. Life as I know it would be over.
