We all have experienced some type of stress whether it be emotional or mental. Too much stress can shut down or change our appetite. When we are stressed the body will start producing cortisol which makes us crave sugary and fatty foods or it will send messages to the adrenal glands to produce epinephrine. This hormone is known as adrenaline which activates the body's fight or flight response that puts eating on hold. Excessive stress can lead to stress-induced eating disorders such as binge eating and anorexia. It is extremely common for us to use food to help deal with emotional tension but this is not an effective coping mechanism. To break the cycle of stress-induced eating disorders are to manage stress, don't deprive yourself of food, or keep a food diary.
