Drug Addiction

Drug Addiction

"Drug Addiction is a brain disorder characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli despite adverse consequences" (recovery centers). As the years go by, it seems that drug addiction gets worse and worse even with all of the help that is out there. "Drug addiction can start with experimental use of a recreational drug in social situations, and, for some people, the drug use becomes more frequent" (mayo clinic). Some symptoms of drug addiction include: feeling that you have to use the drug regularly, having intense urges for the drug that block out any other thoughts, over time, needing more of the drug to get the same effect and so much more. There are so many resources out there to help you, but people just need to take advantage of them and actually use them.

  1. I really loved that you touched on drug addiction. Substance use disorder is a real disorder that can be diagnosed by a mental health professional in the DSM-5 and a lot of the times, people with these addictions have used drugs excessively over an extended period of time. Many people blame drug addicts for their lifestyle but they do not realize how difficult it is to stop once you get addicted to substances like LSD, cocaine, methamphetamine, etc. Withdrawal reactions are usually very abrasive as well which is why it is never suggested to stop taking a substance cold turkey. You have to build your tolerance and find the willpower in you to reist drugs because of the intense urges one will experience. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Thank you for sharing a very sensitive topic. Substance use disorder is the impulsive behavioral need to consume substances. You are right regarding that an addiction could start by just recreational. I wanted to add to your comment that most people who suffer from addition is because they are in denial of there symptoms and distress in there life. This behavior leads for the person to keep consuming and getting high to avoid these feelings that are to distressing to process. This leads from one mental disorder to another becoming extremely hard to treat. If I would say how can a person stop would be by becoming aware of the real problem which is the impulse behavior and try to separate the addiction problem and substituted it by something positive such as a positive reinforcement. Thank you again and I hope your well even though we don't know each other.. Spread the love..lol

  3. I really enjoyed reading your post as I am very interested in drug addiction. Drug addiction is a much bigger problem than people realize here in the U.S. Addiction can be treated by mental health professionals; however, the addicted person must go through months of recovery before the "addiction" can actually be treated. I learned in nursing school that most addicts who are seeking help stay clean and healthy mostly up to 9 months of recovery and then begin to spiral out of control and go back to using drugs. Drug addicts minds are fogged and therefore, addicts to not have proper judgment as you mentioned that the high from the drug can block out rational thoughts. Thanks for sharing!
