I believe the majority of our behavior as humans is driven by emotions. Stated within chapter one slide show knowledge, competence, and motivation are the key factors of behavior. Knowledge: how to perform the behavior- knowledge governed by experience. Competence: capable of doing the behavior- experience/ maturity. Motivation: impetus or reason for the behavior- nature vs. nurture. All components are necessary for behavior to occur as well as the things that I mentioned which can hinder the following mentioned in order for behavior to occur. Although I do believe the majority of human behavior is governed but thought and emotion which then is followed but actions there are always exception and those who don’t think before doing and who act on impulse. Also stated in the slide shows; Impulsiveness: tendency to choose immediate reward, influenced more by nearness of reward. Now varying from person to person and what an individual does on impulse can affect them negative or positively. Someone who made make a hasty decision such as moving transferring school joining the services but end up benefiting from it verses someone who makes a hasty decision to drive drunk or rob. People who have a tendency to behave on impulse need to learn self control. Defined in the slide shows self control: tendency to choose delayed rewards, influenced less by nearness of reward. Someone who has self control is someone who thoroughly thinks things through with the outcome and consequences of their actions. Someone who has self control and self disciplined and knows appropriate time and places and way to act accordingly are successful people. According the slide show; Benefits of self-control: higher grades, less alcohol use, better adjustment, better interpersonal relations.
Therefore another benefit of self control being better interpersonal relations such has more successful relationships. Suggested by the slide shows; the Good gene hypothesis: beauty signals that the person has good genes for intelligence, good immune system, healthy babies, and good parenting. This going both for male and female and what the each seeks in the opposite sex for a partnership. Each desire someone also who is stable and will give them a sense of security but of course you need to be attracted to the individual. Standards of beauty are the same the world over: averageness, symmetry, sexual dimorphism (feminine, masculine). Women select mates to increase chance of survival of their few offspring. Men select mates to increase chance of producing many offspring Women prefer mates who have good financial prospects and are ambitious and industrious. These traits are needed to raise a family successfully. Men prefer mates who have good looks, which is indicative of fertility. Fertility is a trait that is needed to produce many children. In addition, to have a successful family, you need to successful individual in some sense of the term. Those who know how to behave, communicate, and who have self control in order to raise a happy and successful family.
